The story

Kendov Dvorec – Michelin Recommended Fine Dining in Idrija, Slovenia

Kendov Dvorec

In the quiet valley of Spodnja Idrija, time moves at its own pace. Here, a manor with roots stretching back to 1377 has been restored and brought to life as a five-star hotel and member of the international Relais & Châteaux association. Kendov Dvorec is a place where the past is not merely preserved but lived, and that spirit extends directly to the table.

The kitchen is led by chef Franci Pivk, who has been with the manor for twenty-eight years. His cooking is described as poetry—original and refined yet modest. The menu follows the seasons, drawing on fresh ingredients from the immediate surroundings and reviving ancient recipes from the Idrija region. Expect dishes like žlikrofi, bakalca, bati, ajmoht, and štruklji, all rooted in a centuries-old tradition of handcraft and local knowledge. This is the cuisine of grandmothers, brought into the present with skill and respect.

The wine experience is equally deliberate. A selection of top-tier wines from the Primorska region complements the food, and the house sommelier guides guests through tastings in the manor’s cellar. The restaurant has earned a Michelin Recommended distinction, a recognition that speaks to the quiet excellence of the cooking and the sincerity of the welcome.

The surrounding grounds, including a garden lovingly tended by 82-year-old Marija Golja, add to the sense of place. Guests often describe the property as a piece of paradise—a spot to slow down, eat well, and reconnect with what matters.

Within the embrace of the centuries-old walls of Kendov Dvorec, where time slows down against a backdrop of endless Idrija greenery, a refined chapter of manor-house gastronomy is being written. The philosophy of the kitchen remains deeply rooted in respect for local ingredients. The evening menus - the fish-based Katarina menu or the meat-based Jakob menu - are not merely a sequence of courses, but a journey through Idrija. The Jakob menu began with smoked lamb, accompanied by beans and a hint of horseradish, creating a light and harmonious starter. Beneath the glow of crystal chandeliers and accompanied by polished service, bleki pasta with rabbit and sage arrived at the table. The silky sauce, made from a reduced stock, gently caressed both the palate and the soul. The highlight of the evening belonged to the expertly prepared venison fillet, accompanied by handmade Idrija žlikrofi, asparagus, and pumpkin purée. Despite its more contemporary approach, the manor remains faithful to dishes that define its character. Smukavc, bakalca, zelševka... these are not merely nostalgic memories, but reminders that true gastronomy begins where a kitchen understands its place. The experience is completed by elegant service, the charm of the manor, and a glass from its richly stocked wine cellar. It is an experience in which Idrija’s culinary heritage is dressed in its most beautiful and seductive form.
