The story
Perched at seven hundred meters near Maribor, Turistična & ekološka kmetija Pri Baronu serves seasonal Slovenian organic cuisine from a working farmstead that has stood for over two centuries. The current generation continues a straightforward philosophy that moves produce directly from their own gardens to the dining table. Guests step into a landscape where orchards and meadows meet the kitchen entrance. This setting anchors every meal prepared on-site.
Three generations now tend the soil and manage the food preparation under one roof. Their approach relies entirely on seasonal harvests rather than imported ingredients or complex techniques. The menu shifts according to what the land yields, which explains why Gault&Millau awarded this establishment a solid twelve and a half points. Authenticity drives every preparation, turning modest vegetables and pasture-raised meats into honest meals that define regional Slovenian cooking.
Appetizers often feature house-infused aronia spirits alongside spelt buns topped with lard spread and pickled wild garlic blossoms. Soup courses rotate between creamy wild garlic preparations and rich beef broths enriched with handmade noodles. Main plates highlight Krškopolje pork ribs, Pohorje-style fried chicken, or slow-braised beef cooked with dried elderberries. Every dish pairs with side vegetables grown on-site, regional organic wines, and a conclusion of Pohorje gibanica or herbal longevity tonics.
