The story
Danilo Gostilna in Reteče, near Škofja Loka, has been feeding guests since 1870. In 1961, Mimi and Danilo Kosmačin bought the old inn, renamed it “Pri Danilu,” and started a new chapter rooted in local cooking. Today, siblings Nina and Gašper Čarman carry that legacy as the third generation. They took over in 2016, renovating the space in a modern style while keeping the soul of the original gostilna intact. The result is a restaurant that honours tradition without being stuck in the past.
The kitchen at Danilo is firmly anchored in the surrounding landscape – a region rich in dairy, wild herbs, and premium meats. The menu draws on old family recipes, reinterpreted with a contemporary touch. Dishes like Loška mešta, Loška smojka, and Loška medla are traditional local staples, reimagined with modern technique. Tasting menus of three, four, or seven courses let guests experience this philosophy in full. Each plate balances creativity with a deep respect for seasonal, home-grown ingredients.
Wine is taken seriously here. Gašper Čarman, twice named Slovenia’s best sommelier, has built a cellar of more than 750 labels, stored at a precise 18°C. The selection spans top Slovenian and international producers, chosen to complement the food and introduce guests to new wine worlds. A dedicated wine pairing option is available for all tasting menus.
Danilo’s commitment to refined, contemporary Slovenian cuisine earned it a Michelin Recommended award, a nod to its consistent quality and thoughtful approach. The atmosphere balances warmth and sophistication – a place where the family’s story is felt in every detail, from the welcoming service to the carefully composed plates.
