The story
Gostilna Pod smrekco sits on the outskirts of Novo Mesto along the Krka River, where generations have preserved authentic Slovenian cuisine since the first recipes were passed down from a grandmother’s kitchen. The team purchases daily produce from nearby organic growers and relies on a charcoal grill to add a distinct smoky depth to every plate. This commitment to unprocessed ingredients means the menu shifts with what the surrounding farms yield each season.
While the Slovenian kitchen traditionally favors hearty inland dishes like beef soup, matevž with sour cabbage, and homemade cottage cheese štruklji, the restaurant simultaneously surprises diners with a serious dedication to Adriatic seafood. Scorpionfish, John Dory, and grilled octopus arrive prepared with quiet precision, while the team also serves black risotto and scampi in buzara. Heavy cuts such as beef fillet and the house specialty steak finish on the coals alongside Wiener schnitzel and pasta classics.
Gault&Millau awarded the inn a 12.5 score for maintaining this straightforward approach without chasing culinary spectacle. Two indoor dining rooms and an adjacent terrace accommodate seventy-two seated guests and fifty-two on the open air, reinforcing a simple rule that treats visitors as friends rather than customers. Evening meals typically conclude with grandmother’s apple strudel, gibanica, or walnut-filled pancakes, leaving a lasting impression through honest cooking rather than theatrical presentation.
