The story

Gostilna Vovko, Novo Mesto: A Michelin-Recommended Family Inn Since 1977

A Family Affair Since 1977

In the small settlement of Ratež, just outside Novo Mesto, Gostilna Vovko has been practicing its own brand of Dolenjska hospitality for nearly five decades. This is a family house where the kitchen moves with the rhythm of the seasons, cooking with local producers and a belief in simple, honest food without shortcuts. The restaurant's own words capture its spirit: "Sezonsko, sveže, iskreno in lokalno, brez bližnjic" – seasonal, fresh, sincere, and local, with no shortcuts.

The kitchen, rooted in the traditions of the Dolenjska region, is one that many classics are still made by hand – noodles, štruklji, svaljki – prepared as they have been in the house for generations. The result is a menu of clear, decisive flavours built on top-quality, locally sourced ingredients. This commitment to authenticity has earned Gostilna Vovko a consistent place in the Michelin Guide, where it has been recognized with a Michelin Plate award for multiple consecutive years, most recently as Michelin Recommended in 2026. Critics have called it "one of the best inns of the new Dolenjska wave," perfectly adapted to modern currents of traceable, local cooking.

The Wine Bar and More

Beyond the dining room, the restaurant features a wine bar, housed in the "Machova soba," where a beautiful fireplace sets the tone. Here, host Rok Vovko, a trained sommelier and wine enthusiast, has curated a selection of over 200 labels, including a thoughtful selection of natural wines. It is a space for a glass of wine, an espresso, or a light bite from the cold starters and house desserts, such as the house-made game pâté, beef carpaccio, or smoked trout tartare.

For those wishing to extend their stay, Gostilna Vovko also offers accommodation in simple, comfortable rooms. A breakfast is served each morning, and the team can help arrange visits to local winemakers, bike rentals, or a trip to a nearby beekeeper. It is a place that feels like a genuine home, where the relationship with the guest extends beyond the moment at the table.

Among the rolling hills of Dolenjska, tradition does not require grand words. At Vovko, it reveals itself through the plates, the wine glass, and the rhythm of a place far removed from the bustle of the city. Guests may arrive seeking peace and quiet, but they stay because of the flavours. Even the homemade bread says much about the house, reminding visitors that a truly good inn often proves itself through the basics. Among the menu’s highlights are the house-made ravioli with a variety of seasonal fillings. The pasta is delicate, and every bite reflects careful handcraft and a refined sense of balance. For the heartier part of the meal, the kitchen relies on carefully selected meats. Mature cuts of beef or lamb from local farms appear on the plates, cooked to perfect juiciness. Seasonal vegetables and side dishes bring freshness and prevent the dishes from feeling heavy. The wine selection forms a chapter of its own - here, a glass of wine is not merely an accompaniment, but an essential part of the experience. Vovko also opens its doors to local distillers and the stories behind their craft. The sweet finale belongs to tarragon štruklji served with poached pear and softly whipped cream. With this dessert as well, Vovko remains faithful to what Dolenjska does best: warmth, flavour, and the feeling that around a good table, time slows down just a little.
