The story
Restavracija Vile Planinka serves modern Slovenian cuisine rooted in the unspoilt valley of Jezersko near Preddvor. Owner Marjan Batagelj acquired the historic property in 2023 and reoriented the kitchen toward organic sourcing and minimal environmental impact. The Master Chef transforms locally grown herbs and fresh farm produce into simple yet precise plates. This grounded approach earned a 14.5 score from Gault&Millau, which praised how the kitchen respects ingredients without confining them to predictable classics.
Diners often pause for the smoked potato ravioli, a preparation that elevates a humble root vegetable through careful technique. The pike-perch fillet arrives alongside a smooth almond purée, highlighting the restaurant's commitment to balanced textures and clean finishes. A dedicated vegan menu receives equal attention, ensuring plant-based guests encounter the same high standards of Slovenian cooking as other tables. Every service begins with freshly baked sourdough produced in the house oven.
The restaurant occupies a wooden structure where original century-old furniture blends with contemporary architectural lines. Two in-house sommeliers curate the climate-controlled wine cellar, referred to internally as the Sanctuary. They match regional selections from all nine Slovenian wine-growing areas with the rotating seasonal menu. Guests may also walk through the adjacent botanical garden, which cultivates indigenous flora without artificial inputs.
