The story
High in the Jezersko valley, surrounded by the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, Vila Planinka offers a dining experience shaped by the purity of its setting. The restaurant, part of the same-named boutique hotel, has earned a Michelin Recommended distinction for its commitment to local, organic ingredients and the cuisine of Master Chef Jernej Kamič. It is open to both hotel guests and outside visitors who book ahead.
Chef Kamič’s cooking is a direct expression of the land around him. His inspiration comes from morning visits to local producers and walks through the woods, where he gathers wild herbs and fruits. His culinary story began in his grandmother’s kitchen in the Gorenjska region, and his dishes now speak through the honesty of their ingredients. He believes in simplicity and sophistication, letting the quality of the produce lead.
The menu changes constantly, dictated by what the season offers. Tasting menus are the recommended way to experience the Chef’s vision, with options ranging from four to seven courses, including vegan versions. Standout dishes from the current menu include venison tartare with black walnut gel and smoked mayonnaise, trout with kohlrabi dashi and spruce needle-infused oil, and a traditional štrukelj stuffed with masovnik, served with potato and buttermilk espuma. The philosophy extends to the bread, which is baked daily with stone-ground organic grain and wild yeast. Every ingredient is sourced from Slovenian farms and producers who prioritise quality over quantity.
The wine room, called the ‘Sanctuary’ by the house sommeliers, holds over 250 exclusively Slovenian wines. The collection covers all nine wine-growing regions of the country, with a strong emphasis on orange wines and biodynamic natural wines. The list includes both classic varieties and rare indigenous grapes, with many archival vintages. The sommeliers are happy to guide guests through this impressive selection, adding stories and humour to the tasting journey.
The entire Vila Planinka experience is designed to encourage guests to unplug and recharge. Rooms have no electronic devices or Wi-Fi, and the dining room itself feels like a natural extension of the alpine surroundings. This focus on simplicity and wellbeing makes every meal at the restaurant feel unhurried and deeply connected to place.
