The story
The building that houses L'Aliança d'Anglès was constructed in 1900 as the headquarters of an agricultural cooperative. In 1919, the Feliu-Martí family took over the café bar within, and it became a local gathering place known for its calamari, sandwiches, and lively evenings of cards and billiards. Over the decades, the family transformed the space: first a small restaurant with six tables opened in 1980, then the entire building became a restaurant in 1995. By 2004, the Michelin Guide had awarded it a star. After a period of closure following the death of family patriarch Lluís in 2009, the restaurant was reopened in 2013 by his children Josep Maria, Cristina, and Marina, blending the spirit of the original café with their father’s culinary legacy.
Today, Cristina Feliu, who grew up in the family bar and later studied tourism and sommelier skills, leads the front of house with a warm, professional touch. She has been at the helm of the dining room since 2014. Her partner, Àlex Carrera, took over the kitchen in 2018. Trained as an economist, Carrera followed his passion for cooking at ESHOB in Barcelona and then worked alongside some of Spain’s most respected chefs: Fermí Puig, Jean Louis Neichel, Andoni Luis Aduriz, and the Roca brothers. His cuisine is modern, with a clear personality, yet rooted in the traditions of Catalonia. The restaurant’s own description says it best: “Flavor, sincerity, delicacy, harmony of sensations, respect for the product, sensitivity and subtlety. That’s how we cook: cuisine of yesterday, today and tomorrow.”
Within a year of Carrera’s arrival, the Michelin Guide awarded the restaurant a star once again – a recognition it has maintained ever since, most recently confirmed in 2026. The restaurant also holds two Repsol Suns and has been named among the top ten in Girona by Macarfi. The building itself has been thoughtfully updated: a former loft from the bar era was converted into a striking wine cellar, visible from the dining room, and the kitchen was thoroughly renovated in 2023. The result is a place where the past and present coexist comfortably, and where contemporary Catalan cooking is served with sincerity and skill.
