The story

Castillo de Montemayor – Michelin-Recommended Dining in Béjar, Spain

Dining Inside a 12th-Century Castle

In the village of Montemayor del Río, near Béjar, the Castillo de Montemayor offers something rare: a restaurant set within the stone walls of the Castillo de San Vicente, a fortress that once guarded the border of the Kingdom of León. The space has been carefully restored, and today it houses both a fine dining restaurant and the Museo del Medievo, making a meal here an immersion in local history.

The kitchen follows a philosophy of kilometre zero, working with producers from the Sierra de Béjar. Chestnuts from the area, local meats, and seasonal vegetables form the backbone of a menu that reinterprets traditional Castilian recipes with modern technique. The restaurant describes its cooking as “vanguardia” — a respectful, contemporary take on the flavours of the land.

This commitment to product and place earned the restaurant a place in the Guía MICHELIN España 2026, where it is listed as a recommended address. The recognition is woven into the restaurant’s own story: on its website, the Michelin mention sits alongside the castle’s crest, a quiet nod to the quality of what is served within these medieval walls.

Two Menus, One Philosophy

The kitchen offers two distinct ways to experience the cuisine. The Castillo Menu, available Wednesday to Friday from October to June, is a daily fine dining proposal priced at €21 per person. It includes an appetizer, starter, main course (choice of meat or fish), pre-dessert, and dessert — honest cooking executed with the same care as the à la carte.

For a deeper exploration, the Tasting Menu is a sensory journey through the Sierra, composed of 6 to 7 courses selected daily by the kitchen team. Priced at €47 per person, it requires advance booking at least 24 hours ahead and is served at set times (2:00 PM for lunch, 9:00 PM for dinner). It is not available during July and August, when the restaurant prioritises service for a higher volume of guests.

Both menus include bread and filtered water. The restaurant notes that it currently does not offer vegan or vegetarian options, and advises guests with allergies or intolerances to call ahead.

A Setting That Completes the Meal

Dining at Castillo de Montemayor is as much about the atmosphere as the food. The castle’s thick stone walls, arched windows, and restored interiors create a backdrop that is both grand and intimate. In warmer months, La Terraza offers outdoor seating with views of the surrounding Sierra de Francia.

Before or after the meal, guests can explore the on-site Museum of the Middle Ages, which provides context for the castle’s history and the region’s heritage. The restaurant also participates in the Ruta del Vino Sierra de Francia, a wine route that connects local bodegas and producers.

For those seeking a restaurant that combines medieval architecture, Michelin-level cooking, and a deep respect for the ingredients of the Sierra de Béjar, Castillo de Montemayor delivers an experience that is both grounded and memorable.
