The story
In the heart of La Rioja, Lumbre is a restaurant that bridges tradition and innovation. Chef Sergio Hernando Diez opened its doors in late 2019, transforming the former La Cueva de Doña Isabela into something entirely new. The name Lumbre—meaning “fire” or “light”—sets the tone for a kitchen that draws on the region’s culinary roots while pushing forward with a contemporary vision.
The restaurant’s space is as thoughtful as its cooking. A thorough renovation uncovered a 17th-century wine cellar (calado), now exposed alongside warm materials like wood, stone, and iron. The result is a dining room that feels both spacious and intimate, history and modernity in balance.
Lumbre’s team describes itself as humble, focused on quality ingredients and simplicity. The menu changes with the seasons, and the kitchen’s approach is straightforward: start with excellent produce, then let technique and creativity enhance it. This is contemporary cuisine that respects what came before—a point echoed by a guest who called the Lumbre menu “a blast,” adding that if the old Cueva de Doña Isabela was good, “the new Lumbre is even better.”
Michelin has taken notice. Lumbre is listed in the 2025 and 2026 editions of the Michelin Guide Spain & Portugal as a Recommended restaurant, a recognition that speaks to the consistency and ambition of the project.
Dinner service runs from Monday to Sunday, with a Saturday-only schedule and Wednesday closure. On weekends, the calado opens for wine and local products—a chance to taste the region’s bounty in a setting that feels like a secret discovery. The atmosphere is casual but attentive, with an open kitchen and a mood that invites lingering.
Lumbre is not about flash. It’s about honest cooking, a warm room, and a clear sense of place. In Casalarreina, that’s enough.
