The story
El Ventador sits quietly on Passeig de Sant Feliu in Barruera, a small stone village in the Alta Ribagorça. Here, Elisabet Farrero runs a kitchen that draws deeply from the surrounding mountains. The restaurant describes itself as "cuina creativa de muntanya" — creative mountain cuisine — and the menu changes with the rhythm of local harvests. The atmosphere is calm and unpretentious, a place where the scent of pine and the taste for natural, beautiful things set the tone.
Elisabet Farrero studied humanities at Pompeu Fabra University and worked in Barcelona’s cultural sector before returning to Barruera in 2012. With her mother, she opened El Ventador as a modest wine-and-tapes bar. That same summer, she felt the pull toward deeper gastronomy and began offering a midday menu. The following autumn, she trained at Albert Raurich and Tamae Imachi’s Dos Palillos in Barcelona, where contemporary techniques left a lasting impression. Back in Barruera, she built a proposal rooted in the products of the Alt Pirineu, treated with a personal, updated perspective. In 2021, Cuina magazine named her one of Spain’s 20 young talents on its 20th anniversary. The next year, the Acadèmica Catalana de Gastronomia i Nutrició awarded her the Cuinera Revelació 2022 (Revelation Chef 2022). Her work also earned a place at the gala dinner of the World Travel Market in London, organized by the Catalan Tourism Agency, and she spoke at Gastropirineu in the Vall de Núria.
The kitchen works with seasonal, local ingredients — game, mushrooms, vegetables from nearby farms, and meats from the Ribagorça. Dishes listed on the menu include confit duck rolls, eggplant confit in tomato roast, smoked venison carpaccio with pine heart, smoked tomato terrine with anchovies, pork trotters with prawns and oyster sauce, trout with fennel foam, and Ribagorça lamb shoulder with yogurt and quinoa. The cooking is artisanal and delicate, balancing contemporary Catalan techniques with the flavours of the Pyrenees.
El Ventador holds a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026, a recognition that aligns with its consistent quality and the personal vision of its chef. Throughout the year, guests can choose from a changing à la carte or a surprise tasting menu — the latter is the only option in August, featuring the most emblematic dishes of the season. The restaurant also offers outdoor seating, air conditioning, and space for private parties, with table service that keeps the experience intimate and direct.
