The story

Platero & Co, Gaucín – Bib Gourmand Andalusian Dining in the Serranía de Ronda

New Rustic Kitchen in a Whitewashed Hilltop Village

Perched in the historic “pueblo blanco” of Gaucín, Platero & Co commands sweeping views over the Guadiaro Valley and the chestnut- and cork-oak-covered mountains of the Serranía de Ronda. This intimate restaurant—no more than five tables, seating 12 to 15 guests—offers a personal, unhurried dining experience that has earned it a Michelin Bib Gourmand for good quality, good value cooking.

The Philosophy: Recognisable Food, Local Roots

Chef Barry Smit and front-of-house Hellen Blott, a Dutch couple who have made Andalusia their home, describe their cooking as “New Rustic Kitchen.” Everything is prepared on the premises, blending traditional and modern techniques. The dish is always recognisable as food—no unnecessary fuss, just local products presented with a twist when it makes sense. The regularly changing menu carries an Andalusian touch, drawing on seasonal produce from the market gardens of the Ronda mountain range: goats’ cheeses, mushrooms, Iberian pork, cherries, and chestnuts. On average, expect six starters, six main courses, and about four homemade desserts.

The Setting: Terrace Dining with a View

When weather permits, from spring to autumn, guests dine al fresco on the private terrace, taking in the spectacular panorama toward the Mediterranean coast. On cooler evenings, the charming indoor dining area is warm and comfortable. The wine list is a particular point of care, featuring natural and organic wines from small family-run bodegas in the DO Sierras de Málaga and Ronda appellations, with several available by the glass.

A Personal Welcome

Hellen and Barry bring over 40 years of combined experience in hospitality, having previously run the successful Mesón La Pozuela in nearby Jubrique. Hellen, who manages the front of house, has a passion for local wines and knows the area’s walks and sights. Barry, a chef his entire professional life, is responsible for everything on your plate—and that, he says with a smile, is all he knows how to do. The restaurant’s name, Platero & Co, is inspired by Juan Ramón Jiménez’s classic Andalusian work Platero y Yo, a reflection on the simple joys of life.
