The story
Gran Sol is an emblematic bar on San Pedro street in Hondarribia’s Marina district, a former fishing neighbourhood that remains the city’s social heart. The bar describes itself as a “hervidero de gentes” – a hive of people – and its terrace overflows with locals and visitors drawn by the promise of exceptional pintxos.
Pintxos, the miniature cuisine of the Basque Country, are the essence of Gran Sol. The kitchen treats them as a genuine form of gastronomy, close and emotional. This philosophy has earned the bar a Michelin Recommended distinction, a recognition of its consistent quality and lively atmosphere.
The team – including Iñigo Tizón, Mikel Muñoz and Alberto Loro – has collected numerous competition titles. Their pintxo “Los Lunes al Sol” was named best in Spain in 2024, and “Tizón” took the national runner-up spot in 2023. Earlier, a smoked cod toast called “Hondarribia” won best pintxo of Euskal Herria in 2013. These awards reflect a kitchen that constantly refines its ideas.
Dishes change with the seasons, but some standouts appear on the website. A txipiron (baby squid) stuffed with foie gras sits on a creamy black-rice risotto made with artisanal bread tinted with squid ink – a nod to tradition, updated. Another pintxo layers confit cod loin in the style of pulpo a la gallega over a light mushroom cream, finished with a potato looping. Fresh Navarre asparagus, when in season, come with cod kokotxas and a porrusalda sauce with cheese cream.
Gran Sol does not take reservations. Guests are seated by staff as tables become available, which adds to the bar’s spontaneous, convivial spirit. The kitchen is open Tuesday through Saturday for lunch and dinner, and Sunday for lunch only. Monday is the weekly rest day.
In Hondarribia, a town with a historic quarter, sea views and a strong fishing tradition, Gran Sol is a place where cooking feels personal and the atmosphere is genuinely festive. It is a bar that rewards return visits.
