The story

Åhus Gästgivaregård – Three Centuries of Swedish Hospitality in Åhus

Three Centuries of Warmth on the Harbour

Åhus Gästgivaregård has stood at the water's edge since the early 1700s, when the yellow two-storey building served as a meeting point for sailors, harbour workers and merchants on one side, while the innkeeper dispensed brännvin from the other – long before the days of the state monopoly. The more refined guests climbed to the dining room upstairs. That layering of characters, of everyday life and occasion, has never really left the place.

Today the inn holds 70 beds and five conference rooms, yet the dining room remains the beating heart of the house. White tablecloths, candlelight and creaking floors set a tone that is warm rather than stiff – the White Guide, which awarded Åhus Gästgivaregård its Fine level recognition for 2026, put it well: jeans jacket and black tie are equally at home here.

Swedish Cooking with a Clear Regional Accent

The menu is what the White Guide describes as "cosily modern and unpretentious, with a clear regional origin in the ingredients." A butter-fried Scanian cockerel served with lemon-scented potato purée, local pork belly and a red-wine jus is the kind of dish that anchors the cooking firmly in Skåne without leaning on nostalgia. The Swedish cuisine here is honest and ingredient-led – the kind of food that makes you want to linger, which is exactly what the room invites you to do.

A Place That Holds Everyone

The salons at Åhus Gästgivaregård are generous enough to accommodate a ladies' trio working through dessert, a couple of retirees plotting their next road trip, and a conference group spilling into the bright winter garden for coffee – all at the same time, without any of it feeling crowded or incongruous. The surrounding neighbourhood adds to the appeal: grand villas, a marina along the Helge å and the Absolut Vodka headquarters just around the corner make for an easy afternoon stroll before dinner.

The inn is open year-round, making it a reliable destination for a weekend away in any season – and a rare example of a place where centuries of hospitality feel genuinely lived-in rather than performed.

2026
White Guide — Fine level

Joy, good cheer, glamour, and old-world charm are embedded in these walls. The clamor of sailors, harbor workers, merchants, and distinguished guests has filled this building since the early 1700s. So when we take our seats at a table set with a crisp white cloth and lit candles, savoring a butter-fried Scania rooster served with lemon-infused mashed potatoes, locally sourced pork belly, and a red wine sauce, we find ourselves sitting (quite comfortably, too) right in the heart of raw history. Yet, despite all that, the place never feels stuffy. The menu is warmly modern and unpretentious, with ingredients that proudly declare their regional roots. The salons accommodate every style and crowd, whether you’re wearing a denim jacket or a tuxedo. A trio of women dives enthusiastically into dessert while a couple of septuagenarians map out pleasant travel stops on their drive to Kivik. In the background, laughter and conversation from conference guests drift through as they clatter across pleasantly creaking floorboards on their way to coffee in the beautiful winter garden. The surrounding area—featuring grand villas, a quaint marina along the Helge River, and the Absolut Vodka headquarters just around the corner—invites leisurely strolls, and if you’re looking to treat yourself to a lovely weekend getaway, the guesthouse in Åhus remains open year-round.
