The story

Grinda Wärdshus – Award-Winning Island Inn in the Stockholm Archipelago

An Island Apart

About an hour's journey by archipelago boat from Stockholm, the small island of Grinda belongs to a different pace entirely. The island is owned by Skärgårdsstiftelsen and kept open in the traditional way — horses and sheep still graze its landscape, holding back the forest just as they always have. From the jetty, a short walk through the trees reveals what looks almost like an apparition: a large, beautiful Art Nouveau villa standing very much in the real world. That is Grinda Wärdshus.

Dining on the Terrace

On a warm summer evening, the place to be is under the awning on the terrace, watching the sun lower itself over the bay. The White Guide, which recommends Grinda Wärdshus in its 2026 edition, captures the experience precisely: a whiting hidden beneath thinly shaved fennel, strawberries with vanilla ice cream to follow, and a well-chosen wine list drawing from producers across the wider world. Simple pleasures, done with care.

Most guests arrive by private boat and moor in the harbour just below. For those who want something lighter, the harbour-side bar Framfickan serves more casual dishes straight off the dock.

Beyond the Main Table

Grinda Wärdshus is more than a restaurant. The property accommodates private parties, banqueting, and weddings — the jugendvilla setting lending itself naturally to occasions that call for something out of the ordinary. There is outdoor seating, a bar, and space for both larger gatherings and quieter meals. Families are welcome, and the island itself — car-free, grazed, and unhurried — does much of the work in setting the mood before anyone has even sat down.

A little over an hour's archipelago ferry ride from Stockholm and you're in another world, another time. The landscape on the small island of Grinda, owned by the Archipelago Foundation, is kept open just as it was in days gone by by grazing horses and sheep. After a short walk from the pier, a large, beautiful, and very real Art Nouveau villa appears among the trees, almost like a mirage. It's the inn. On a warm summer evening, you're happy to sit under the awning on the terrace. And as the sun sinks over the bay, a mackerel dish, tucked beneath shavings of fennel, adds a golden touch to your evening. Strawberries with vanilla ice cream to follow. The wine list features a nicely curated selection from around the world. Most guests arrive in their own boats and dock at the harbor below. Simpler dishes are served at the Framfickan bar on the pier.
