The story
On a quiet street below Chalmers, Trattoria la Strega has built a loyal following among those who know where to find genuine Italian cooking. The dining room is almost always full, yet the restaurant remains a discovery — a place that doesn't rely on foot traffic but on the quiet pull of exceptional food and wine.
La Strega is the meeting of two worlds: Nina Rydqvist's passion for food and Andrea Consonni's love for wine. After living together in Milan, they moved to Gothenburg, where Nina refined her already excellent skills as a chef. With relatives in Sicily and experience in Lombardy, she brings depth to both Southern and Northern Italian traditions. The kitchen’s philosophy is rooted in zero-waste cooking — making the most of every ingredient, from seasonal vegetables to the whole beast. The result is Italian food that is genuine, simple, and good.
Andrea’s commitment to biodynamic and natural wines complements the menu, which changes daily. The wine list is clear, focused, and chosen with the same respect for the land that drives the kitchen.
The White Guide 2026 awarded Trattoria la Strega "Very fine level," noting that a bewilderingly large majority of Gothenburgers have never even heard of the little Italian restaurant on Aschebergsgatan. Those who know, keep coming back. That quiet reputation is earned through consistency, integrity, and a kitchen that never compromises.
The menu is not posted online. La Strega encourages guests to check their Instagram for a sense of the food, then call or email to reserve. The restaurant does not accept parties larger than eight, and asks for 24 hours' notice if you need to reduce your booking. It is a small operation that values respect and care — from the kitchen to the table.
