The story

Telegrafen, Grebbestad – Swedish Coastal Cooking Done Right

A Small Restaurant with a Clear Point of View

Telegrafen sits on Nedre Långgatan in Grebbestad, a fishing village on Sweden's rugged Bohuslän coast, and it does exactly what it sets out to do: serve honest, well-crafted Swedish food without fuss or pretension. The White Guide awarded it Fine level recognition, noting that the menu is "short, concise and entirely sufficient" – a description that captures the restaurant's character perfectly.

The Room, the Garden, the Mood

Half a flight down from street level, the interior is a relaxed accumulation of objects and art on the walls – personal rather than designed. When the weather cooperates, the real draw is the enclosed garden terrace, where solid wooden tables make for an unhurried lunch or a long summer evening. The atmosphere is easy and unpretentious, and the service is described by the White Guide as professional, warm and genuinely helpful.

What Ends Up on the Plate

The kitchen keeps its menu tight and seasonal. Fish is a natural focus here – the restaurant's own lunch menu features dishes like butter-fried redfish with a white wine and shellfish broth, topped with fresh herbs, alongside Telegrafen's own fish soup and oysters from the coast. The White Guide singled out the turbot (hake in season) served with a velvety sauce of blended spinach and fresh tarragon, sparkling trout roe, and new potatoes as a high point. Slow-roasted beef from nearby producers rounds out the menu for those who prefer something from the land.

Ingredients are sourced with care. Wines come from small-scale producers, and the beer is brewed just next door at Grebbestads bryggeri. Even dessert carries a sense of place – the White Guide mentions Commissaire Maigret's almond cake flavoured with rum and sea buckthorn as a fitting close to the evening.

Events and the Wider Year

Beyond the regular lunch and dinner service, Telegrafen runs a handful of recurring events: a Christmas table (julbord) made entirely from scratch, wine-and-cheese film evenings in collaboration with a local film society, and seasonal ladies' dinners. It is the kind of programme that keeps regulars coming back through the darker months, long after the summer crowds have gone.

White Guide — Fine level

The sturdy wooden tables in the small enclosed garden are perfect for dining when the weather is mild. Half a flight of stairs down, it’s equally cozy; a motley assortment of knickknacks and artwork adorns the walls. It’s simple and personal. The menu is short, concise, and more than sufficient. The ingredients are carefully chosen. The pike-perch, which is at its best in summer, may be today’s catch and is served with a velvety sauce of mixed spinach and fresh tarragon, sparkling trout roe, and wonderful new potatoes. The slow-roasted bull from Borås turned into a calf for the evening—but was no less praised by the regulars at the neighboring table. Professional, friendly, and helpful waitstaff mention that the wines come from small-scale producers, just like the beer, which is sourced next door from Grebbestad Brewery. Inspector Maigret’s almond cake, flavored with rum and sea buckthorn, brings a pleasant evening to a close. You’re sure to return!
