The story

Pålsjö Krog – Swedish Seafood & Classic Cuisine on the Helsingborg Waterfront

A Waterfront Table Worth Seeking Out

Right on Helsingborg's strandpromenade, with the silhouette of Kronborg Castle across the strait and the historic Pålsjöbaden bathhouse perched on stilts over a mirror-still sound, Pålsjö Krog has earned its place as one of the city's most atmospheric addresses. The White Guide has taken note, recommending it for food that is, in their words, "lovingly prepared classics" — Scanian well-hung entrecôte with sweet-roasted corn purée, and tender turbot in a rich lobster sauce among them. The setting does the rest: when the sun drops over Kattegatt and boats drift slowly past, the terrace here is about as close to the Riviera as southern Sweden gets.

Swedish Cooking, Rooted in the Sea

The kitchen's focus is clear and honest. Swedish cuisine here leans heavily on fish and shellfish — a natural choice given the proximity to the water — while still offering well-considered options for meat lovers and vegetarians alike. Everything is made from scratch, using high-quality ingredients, and paired with a serious wine list and a well-stocked bar. The lunch menu runs on weekdays and Saturdays, with a daily special, a weekly vegetarian dish, and an à la carte option alongside.

More Than Just Dinner

Pålsjö Krog has a lively personality beyond the dining room. Summer brings five weeks of After Beach evenings in July and August, with live bands, cold beer, rosé, and sparkling wine on the terrace. The outdoor boule court invites groups — corporate or otherwise — to play before or after eating, and the three-event "3-kamp" combining boule, cornhole, and spin ladder is a favourite for bachelor parties and company outings. Dogs with good manners are welcome indoors (up to three at a time), and the outdoor terrace operates on a drop-in basis, first come first served.

The rattan armchairs, white-painted timber, and New England-style deck make the setting feel considered rather than accidental. This is Swedish hospitality done with genuine warmth — unhurried, unpretentious, and firmly rooted in what the sea and the region have to offer.

At Påsljöbaden, with Kronborg Castle silhouetted in the distance, we spot dogs out for a walk, evening swimmers on the piers, and a classic-style cold bathhouse standing proudly before us on tall stilts above a mirror-smooth stretch of water. Here, it is highly recommended to sink into the sturdy rattan armchairs beneath white beadboard on the New England-style wooden deck. The service staff cheerfully greet the villa owners from the cream station and present elegantly and lovingly prepared classics, such as Scania-style well-aged entrecôte with sweet-roasted corn purée and flaky turbot in a rich lobster sauce. The teleportation to the Riviera is complete as the sun sinks over the Kattegat and boats slowly glide past in the strait.
