The story

Järvsö Lanthandel – Where Hälsingland's Best Produce Meets a Proper Dinner Table

A General Store, a Restaurant, and a Philosophy Built on Limits

The large grey villa beside the river Ljusnan has lived several lives. Back in the 1960s it housed an actual general store – a lanthandel – before becoming a pottery workshop and a butcher's shop. Today, the general store is back, and it brought a restaurant with it. A small bell above the red double doors announces arriving guests, and on most evenings the handful of tables fill up quickly.

The man behind it all is Tobias Annerhult, who left Stockholm to work with local producers here in Järvsö. That decision shapes everything on the plate. The kitchen's guiding principle is refreshingly blunt: grow through limitations. Rather than chasing year-round variety, the team ferments, smokes, and preserves what Hälsingland actually offers each season – sauerkraut instead of fresh salad in winter, smoked bacon, apple-blossom jelly, herbs grown inside the shop itself. Wasting food is simply not part of the programme.

What Ends Up on the Table

The menu changes constantly, following availability and whatever the cooks feel like making that day. Dishes range in size and ambition – a straightforward burger with fries sits alongside a spiced chicken terrine with smoked egg cream and chanterelles. The common thread, as the White Guide noted when recommending the restaurant, is clean simplicity and an unmistakable pride in Hälsingland ingredients, both on the shop shelves and on the plate.

The wine list is carefully chosen – a focused selection of bottles from Burgundy, Jura, the Loire and northern Italy, picked to work across a menu that never quite stays the same. Local beer from a neighbouring town's brewery was once on the list too, but since that brewery closed, malt drinks now come from Dalarna instead.

The Shop Side of Things

Järvsö Lanthandel is genuinely both things it claims to be. Alongside the restaurant tables, the shelves stock certified-organic vegetables, freshly made mozzarella, house-produced bacon, sausages, sauces, flour, cookbooks and hand-carved kitchen tools – all from the region. Ready-made food boxes, from a hearty red-wine stew to a creamy potato soup, can be delivered straight to your fridge if you'd rather spend the day outdoors.

The atmosphere is intimate almost to the point of feeling like someone's home – because, in a sense, it is. A private room seats up to eight for those who want a little more space. The kitchen also caters off-site and offers takeaway for those passing through.

During the sixties, there was actually a general store here in the large, grey villa right next to the Ljusnan River. After housing a ceramics workshop and a butcher shop, the general store has returned – complete with an attached restaurant as a bonus. A bell above the red double door chimes to welcome newly arriving guests, and soon every table is filled, though there are only a handful of tables in total. The atmosphere is cozy and intimate; it almost feels like hanging out at the home of restaurateur Tobias Annerhult, who left Stockholm to focus on working with local ingredients here in Järvsö. The dishes vary in size and complexity, ranging from a simple burger and fries to a spiced chicken terrine with smoked egg cream and chanterelles. The unifying theme is pure simplicity – and, of course, the evident pride in Hälsingland ingredients, whether displayed on the store’s shelves or featured on the menu. Unfortunately, the neighboring town’s brewery has closed down, so their malt drinks are now sourced from Dalarna. A select handful of wines has been chosen to pair well with most dishes on the ever-changing menu.
