This is something of a hidden gem in Karlstad’s bar and restaurant scene. Guldapan is located “around the corner” from the cluster of venues around Stora torget, and for those who do find their way here, it initially looks much like a standard bar. A long bar counter is the first thing you see when you walk in, and the number of tables is limited in the long, narrow room. But appearances are deceiving. The small plates served evoke fine dining rather than tapas, without breaking the bank. The butter-fried vendace is perfectly cooked and served with a well-balanced lobster foam. The beef cheek’s red wine sauce is incredibly rich in flavor, yet still manages not to overpower the dish. For those with a sweet tooth, there is house-made ice cream served with various accompaniments. Everything is elegantly and invitingly presented, and attended to by comfortably relaxed staff. And given the bar atmosphere, there are, of course, excellent drinks as well. So step away from the usual pub-crawling route and discover this gem.
