Publik Mat & Bar sits right at Norra Hamnen in Lysekil, with pink granite cliffs, rigged sails and the Stångehuvud lighthouse framing the view from its glass-enclosed veranda. The setting alone would be enough to draw a crowd, but what keeps people coming back is the food — a menu that roams freely across the world while staying anchored to the Swedish west coast.

A Menu Built on Invention and Good Humour

The White Guide, which awarded Publik its Fine level recognition, put it well: the menu "spreads in all directions of the world, marked by inventiveness and a cheerful spirit." That spirit is visible in a lineup that moves from langos and Vietnamese noodle salad to BBQ chicken thighs, sashimi and cod from Lysekil itself. The oysters deserve a special mention — plucked locally and tasting, as the guide notes, precisely like the sea they came from. A glass of Jean Dumangin bubbles alongside them is the obvious pairing.

The bar side of the operation carries the same playful confidence. Guests are invited to start with an Olof Palme — O.P. Andersen aquavit with ginger ale — or work through the gin drink trio cheekily named Bra, Bättre, Bäst (Good, Better, Best).

A Room for Everyone

What the White Guide also captured is the warmth of the welcome: whether you arrive as a young family, a group of friends or a couple with a few more years behind you, the reception is equally glad and open. The restaurant describes itself as serving "flavours from the west coast and the world," and that breadth shows in the tags it carries — kids friendly, vegetarian options, outdoor seating, late opening, and a full catering and events offer through its Backyard space. Publik is part of a small group of restaurants, but in Lysekil it functions as a genuine local anchor, the kind of place that works for a spontaneous weeknight dinner as readily as a long celebratory table.
