The story

Ai Ramen Sofia – Stockholm's Corner Ramen Bar on Södermalm

Stockholm's First House-Made Noodle Bar

A group of Stockholm guys who simply missed ramen in their home city opened Ai Ramen on Erstagatan in Södermalm in 2015. Their distinguishing claim from day one: they make their own noodles — something no other ramen joint in Stockholm was doing at the time. The gamble paid off. Ai Ramen won Gulddraken, Stockholm's biggest restaurant prize, and by 2018 had opened a second location, Ai Ramen Klara, on Gamla Brogatan in the city centre.

The Corner That's Always Alive

The Sofia location occupies a street corner where Åsgatan meets Erstagatan, and it draws a crowd in every season. In summer, people spill onto the small pavement tables. Come winter, a characteristically mixed Södermalm crowd perches on stools at the large windows, bowls in hand. White Guide, which recommends Ai Ramen Sofia in its 2026 edition, captures the scene precisely: broths that are deep and considered, noodles with just enough resistance to carry flavour, eggs creamily marinated, mushrooms delivering clean umami without tipping into sweetness, and spring onion that stays fresh to the last bite. The bowls also range in heat level, so the menu works whether you want something gentle or something that builds.

Ramen Done With Conviction

The drinks list keeps the same focused spirit — a tight selection of Japanese-leaning cocktails, sake and beer that function well alongside the food rather than competing with it. The Asian cooking here is rooted in Japanese ramen tradition but made on Södermalm terms: no shortcuts on the broth, no compromise on the noodle texture, and a room that feels like a local rather than a concept.

The Klara outpost on Gamla Brogatan carries a different energy — darker walls, a long bar, regular DJ nights — but the ramen philosophy travels intact between the two addresses. The grilled corn with bacon at Klara has earned its own following.

For anyone tracing Stockholm's serious Asian dining scene, Ai Ramen Sofia is where it started.

The street corner that has breathed life into eastern Söder for many years is tucked away in the dip where Åsgatan meets Erstagatan. It’s always bustling with people! In summer, out at the small tables on the sidewalk. And in winter, inside, a consistently diverse South Side crowd perched on stools by the large windows, simultaneously and somewhat dreamily slurping their ramen. The broths are deep and rich, the noodles perfectly al dente to hold the flavor, the eggs creamily marinated, the mushrooms delightfully umami-rich (not too sweet or smoky), and the spring onions always crisp. And they vary in intensity. On the drink menu, a few functional Japanese gems for cocktails, sake, and beer. For a couple of years now, the sister restaurant Ai Ramen Klara can be found on Gamla Brogatan down in the city center. The venue there is rockier than at Sofia. Black walls, a long bar, and recurring DJs. A nicely preserved legacy from Pitch Records, which occupied this very spot at number 27 for many years. Extra points for that. And for the grilled corn served in a mini cone!
