Naming a restaurant after Jaroslav Hašek's legendary literary anti-hero is a commitment. The Good Soldier Švejk — that cheerfully subversive figure who drove military bureaucracy to madness while knowing exactly how a hop-fragrant beer should taste — sets the bar high. On Östgötagatan 35 in Södermalm, Krogen Soldaten Švejk takes that challenge seriously, and has earned something most restaurants never manage: a genuine identity.
The philosophy here is stated plainly and without apology. Unpasteurised Czech lager — Pilsner Urquell and Bernard on tap — is the centrepiece, and the tapping installation is maintained with a care that borders on devotion. The restaurant's own words say it best: Švejk handles beer as the living drink it is. If a glass ever develops the sour, off notes that plague poorly kept lines, you are encouraged to say so. It almost never happens.
That commitment to draught quality is what White Guide recognised when recommending the place, noting that the priority is getting the Czech taps to excel — and that everything else follows from there.
The food is Central European in the most direct sense: powerful, salty, a touch sour, built to sit alongside a cold beer rather than to stand alone as a statement. Schnitzel variants dominate the menu, honest and filling rather than refined. The White Guide put it plainly — most guests arrive not expecting gastronomic perfection, but in search of an atmosphere and an identity that can only be acquired through long, faithful service. The kitchen understands its role perfectly.
Walk in through the dimly lit entrance — which doubles as bar and waiting area — and you step into something that feels genuinely unhurried by the decades. There are no reservations; it is walk-in only, groups of up to ten. Conversations happen here, sometimes at considerable volume, and the staff contribute as much to the texture of the place as the regulars who seem to have occupied their seats since long before SoFo became a neighbourhood anyone talked about.
As the restaurant puts it, atmosphere is created — it does not simply appear. At Soldaten Švejk, it has been created, slowly and deliberately, over many years of hard work. Hašek himself, the text suggests, would simply have written: "Go to Švejk, see you there."

Indeed, in many ways it feels as though time has stood still here since the literary anti-hero Švejk waged his deadpan resistance against the bureaucracy of the First World War. In the shady front room, which also serves as a bar and waiting room—no table reservations here either—it seems certain men have been sitting since the shots in Sarajevo. Not surprising, given they are constantly teased by the impossible choice between the frothy heads on Pilsner Urquell and Bernard. Overall, “Švejk’s” main priority is ensuring the taps for unpasteurized Czech beer run flawlessly. Consequently, the food is hearty, salty, and tangy, with various schnitzel options dominating the menu. The schnitzels here are of a simpler variety, their sole purpose being to complement the beer. Most visitors likely come here without expecting culinary perfection, but rather with their sights set on soaking up an atmosphere and character that are only earned through long and devoted service. And good beer, of course.
