The story

Oxenstiernan, Stockholm – Michelin-Recommended Swedish Seasonal Restaurant in Östermalm

A Green Haven in the City

Oxenstiernan sits on Storgatan in Östermalm, tucked away between roads and buildings like a forgotten oasis. The restaurant traces its origins to an 18th-century manor and farm that once supplied vegetables and livestock. Today, that legacy of cultivation lives on in a space that feels both timeless and vital.

The interior is a collaboration with artisans and designers, every detail considered. But the heart of the experience is a verdant courtyard garden – a place where lunch, apéro, and dinner unfold under the open sky. Drop-ins are always welcome, and the atmosphere is unhurried, warm, and genuinely welcoming.

Swedish Soil, Seasonal Rhythm

Chef Sebastian Schildt leads the kitchen with a clear philosophy: delve into the Swedish soil for premium, sustainable produce, forage for wild ingredients, and follow the seasons. Nothing is wasted – every part of an ingredient is given a chance to shine. This is Swedish cooking that respects nature’s rhythm, not fussy or overstated, but precise and deeply connected to place.

The menu, called Jardin, changes with what’s available. Starters like tomatoes with pistou and veal tartar with grilled aubergine give way to mains such as Arctic char from the wood oven or lamb from the rotisserie, finished with rosemary, artichokes, and lavender yoghurt. Desserts lean toward the simple and refined: Amalfi lemon sorbet with olive oil and sea salt, or a clafoutis baked in the wood oven with raspberries and almonds.

Between lunch and dinner, an apéro hour offers drinks and snacks – charcuterie from Grönby Chark, zucchini flowers with goat’s cheese and rosemary – a moment to pause and enjoy the garden.

Recognition and Philosophy

Oxenstiernan’s thoughtful approach has earned it a place in the Michelin guide as a Recommended restaurant – a nod to its consistent quality and genuine commitment to sustainability. But the restaurant’s ambitions go beyond awards. It aims to be a meeting place where design, craft, food, and conversation come together, inspiring people to slow down and connect.

For Schildt, gastronomy and sustainability are two sides of the same coin. That conviction is evident in every plate, in the carefully sourced produce, and in the tranquil space that feels like a sanctuary in the centre of Stockholm.
