The story

Riche Stockholm – Swedish Brasserie on Birger Jarlsgatan Recognised by White Guide

An Establishment That Runs on Its Own Terms

Riche sits on Birger Jarlsgatan 4 in Stockholm, and it has long been one of those addresses that means something to the city. The place carries a clear sense of purpose rooted in the vision of Tore Wretman, who took over Riche wanting to challenge conventions and elevate Swedish food culture. That ambition has not been set aside — it shapes everything from the morning bread service to the late-night bar.

White Guide awarded Riche its Fine level recognition in 2026, and the review captures the place well: the breakfast service starts at 07:30 and is almost always fully booked; the wine list is generous; portions are substantial. Reviewers noted smörgåsbröd with pickled herring, soured onion, egg and browned butter ladled tableside from a small saucepan, followed by a creamy risotto finished with shaved parmesan and sweet, spiced figs. The food holds attention even when a well-known Swedish actor walks in unannounced.

A Brasserie with Swedish Roots and Seasonal Thinking

Riche describes itself as a brasserie with Swedish influences, and the menu follows the seasons. Classics sit alongside contemporary dishes, and the kitchen takes its traditions seriously — annual Oyster Days in November, dedicated Steak Tartare Days early in the year, weekend brunch, and seasonal celebrations like the Midsommarprakt that transforms the whole restaurant each June. These recurring events give the place a rhythm that regulars can count on.

The contemporary brasserie format extends across several distinct spaces: the main dining room, Stora Baren, and Lilla Baren — the smaller bar that doubles as a venue for live music, DJ nights, art performances and private hire for up to 120 guests.

Art as a Permanent Part of the Room

Since Wretman's era, art has been woven into the fabric of Riche rather than treated as decoration. The walls and spaces rotate through exhibitions spanning painting, photography, sculpture, installation and performance. Past shows have included photographs from a 1995 David Bowie session, punk-era contact sheets, and solo exhibitions by Stockholm-based painters. Lilla Baren in particular functions as a live gallery — at times hosting three-hour drawing performances projected in real time alongside the usual food and drink.

The result is a place that genuinely runs from morning to late at night, where the food is taken seriously, the art changes the room, and the atmosphere shifts depending on when you arrive.

History

On the record

2026
White Guide — Fine level

This old establishment is perhaps best known to many for its exclusive clientele of champagne-drinking women, suit-clad business executives, and trend-conscious regulars. But Riche is much more than that. It stays lively all day, and the nearly always fully booked breakfast service starts as early as 7:30. For the evening-oriented guest, there is an extensive wine list and a wide selection of dishes. The portions are hearty, and after the introductory open-faced sandwich with matjes herring, pickled onion, egg, and brown butter (which is generously ladled on from a small saucepan), we dig into the creamy risotto. With generous amounts of shaved parmesan and topped with sweet, spiced figs, the dish becomes an absolute hit. The chilled wine slips down easily between bites, and once again, the portion size feels wonderfully ample. When one of our most beloved actors suddenly walks in, we can barely even look up—we are completely absorbed in enjoying the expertly prepared food.
