The story

Voisine Stockholm – French Bistro on Erstagatan Worth Every Visit

A neighbourhood restaurant with a point of view

Voisine — French for "neighbour" — earns its name on Erstagatan 21 in Stockholm's Östra Söder. The name nods directly to the wine bar Folii around the corner, run by the same duo: Béatrice Becher and Jonas Sandberg. The two addresses share an ownership and a philosophy, and together they make a strong case for spending an entire evening on this single block.

The restaurant's own stated philosophy is disarmingly simple: cook food they actually want to eat themselves. The foundation is French cuisine, but the kitchen borrows freely from elsewhere when it feels right. The result is what they call modern bistro cooking, made with genuine care for good ingredients — no more complicated than that, and no less.

The food and the room

White Guide has recognised Voisine at a very fine level, singling out the Swedish-French direction of the menu and specific dishes that linger in the memory. The slow-cooked Iberico pork pluma with seasonal grilled vegetables draws particular praise, as does the Paris-Brest with hazelnut cream — described as both beautiful and genuinely delicious. Seasonal produce drives the menu throughout: recent dishes have included gnocchi with green asparagus, peas and comté, rainbow trout with green tomato and langoustine sauce, and cod with pointed cabbage, lardo and buckwheat.

The atmosphere is welcoming and unfussy. Whether you sit inside the bistro or out on the pavement terrace watching Stockholm go by, there is nothing performative about the experience. It is the kind of place where the ambition shows in the plate rather than the décor.

The Folii connection

White Guide's recommendation is to do both: start or finish at Folii, the wine bar that opens at 16:00, and make sure to eat a proper meal at Voisine in between. The wine list at Voisine is shorter than at Folii but described as very impressive — expect natural and classic French labels alongside a rotating selection by the glass. Once a month, the team hosts a wine lunch on Saturdays, built around a seasonal theme or a place they want to celebrate, combining food and wine in a single sitting.

For anyone exploring this corner of Stockholm, Voisine is the kind of French bistro that rewards coming back.

Good neighbors aren’t just worth their weight in gold; they can also be lifesavers in times of need. Voisine, which simply means "neighbor," feels like just such a noble savior if you happen to run into a bit of hunger while wandering through these neighborhoods where many are called, but few are chosen. The name was chosen because of the watering hole right next door—the wine bar Folii—which is owned and operated by the same duo, namely Béatrice Becher and Jonas Sandberg. This is easily one of the city’s finest wine bars, and Folii—meaning "delightfully mad"—certainly lives up to its name. Especially when faced with the dilemma of staying put for another glass and some light bites, or crossing over to the neighbor for a proper meal and making do with a slightly shorter, yet still highly impressive, wine list. Our bet is to do both: start or finish at the wine bar, but make sure to get a proper meal in your stomach in between. Stepping into this ambitious neighborhood bistro is welcoming, relaxed, and simply a pleasure, whether you choose to dine inside or take a seat at the sidewalk terrace to people-watch. The menu follows a Swedish-French tradition, though it occasionally features Spanish influences, such as the melt-in-your-mouth tender Iberico pluma served with seasonal grilled vegetables. And don’t miss the seductively rich Paris Brest dessert with hazelnut cream. A creation that is as beautiful as it is delicious.
