The story
Tucked behind Skrapan — Västerås's most recognizable skyscraper — on Karlsgatan 4, Vinoteket occupies a building with history to spare. The Officershuset was built in 1904 to house officers from Västmanlands Regiment, and by 1905 it already held a restaurant complete with a coin-operated food automat. That concept didn't last. What's here today does something far more enduring: it creates a room where people genuinely want to stay.
The team behind Vinoteket describe it not as a restaurant but as "a reflection of our own personality" — somewhere simpler and freer, built around good wine, flavourful food, and the kind of conversation that runs long. White Guide awarded the place its Fine level recognition in 2026, and the description in that citation captures it well: a space that draws in every type of guest, from colleagues filling the room with laughter to couples settling into the sofas on the half-landing above.

At Vinoteket, all kinds of groups gather, from coworkers who fill most of the dining room with loud voices and laughter, to a couple on a date relaxing in one of the sofas half a flight of stairs up. Here, a varied menu featuring pizza, Mediterranean-inspired small plates, and classic hot dishes is served—all speaking the same clear language: food should simply be delicious! It can be hard to choose, but our advice is to let the staff handpick for you; you won’t be disappointed. Vinoteket isn’t a restaurant bound by strict rules, but rather a place that serves whatever tastes best at the moment, done in a stylish yet straightforward manner. The same goes for the drinks. With over 400 wines from across the globe lining the shelves, it’s again best to simply ask. The staff confidently and casually guides you through the entire meal, so don’t be alarmed if someone unexpectedly pulls up a chair at your table—it’s almost certainly one of the sommeliers who has discovered a fascinating beverage that will suit you perfectly.
