The story

Kittelfjäll Värdshus, Vilhelmina: White Guide Recommended Swedish Cuisine

Kittelfjäll Värdshus serves refined Swedish cooking in Vilhelmina, utilizing ingredients drawn from the Westrobothnian mountains. The White Guide recommends the restaurant for its careful preparation of regional produce and proteins.

Nordic ingredients and rustic creativity

The kitchen prioritizes local sourcing, selecting items that originate in the immediate vicinity. The team combines regional traditions with techniques learned from work in Åre and Stockholm. Menus adapt to the seasons, presenting elk and reindeer alongside char and vegetables such as whey-baked root celery. The kitchen sometimes prepares black grouse, offering a distinct protein option compared to standard game menus.

Seasonal menus and tasting experiences

Events like the annual taste-conscious meal feature a four-course menu that displays various preparations of local harvests. The regular menu includes gravad Malgomaj char and cold-smoked rainbow trout sourced from Bergmans. House charcuterie consists of sylta made with Lövnäs pork and a warm terrine mixing elk and reindeer. Themed evenings diversify the service, including a fondue night that serves elk and reindeer legs with fresh vegetables and sauces.

The black building and mountain views

A dark-painted building rises prominently in the village, contrasting with the surrounding snow and forest. Panoramic windows frame the mountain slopes, keeping the exterior landscape visible inside. The layout divides into a lounge and a massive bar that links the seating areas. Skiers gather here during the day, while dinner guests arrive in more formal clothing, shifting the atmosphere toward a polished evening setting.

Drinks and wine selection

The innkeeper provides drink recommendations, guiding guests through the beverage options with personal insight. A wine list accompanies the food, offering bottles to match the meal. The large bar remains open for drinks and conversation, serving as a social center for visitors at all times.

Is that black building towering over the village a barn? No, this is where you should head for a good meal – and thanks to the panoramic windows, you can enjoy a view of the surrounding mountain slopes at the same time. The small Västerbotten mountain village of Kittelfjäll has been attracting ski enthusiasts for decades. For a long time it catered mainly to a tight-knit circle, but something is happening – perhaps the inn’s dedicated managers and extensive experience from Åre and Stockholm have helped draw more visitors today. During the day, the inn is filled with rosy-cheeked skiers of all ages, while evening guests – dressed a bit more conservatively – can choose seating in the lounge or at the enormous bar that connects the two sections. Regardless of where you sit, Northern Swedish ingredients are served, prepared with care and finesse. Moose, reindeer, and char may indeed be found on many mountain menus, but when did you last eat grouse? Or whey-baked root celery – an excellent green alternative. Feel free to let the inn’s owner take the lead with drink recommendations.
