The story

Le Murenberg – Michelin-Starred French Cuisine in Bubendorf, Switzerland

Faire chaque jour le meilleur – that is the motto at Le Murenberg, a French restaurant in the village of Bubendorf, Basel-Land. Since opening in 2012, the kitchen has focused on respecting both ingredients and the people who produce them, turning fresh, high-quality products into dishes that are at once classic and modern.

The dining room blends elegant style with homey comfort, and on warm days the terrace invites guests to enjoy their meal al fresco. It is a setting that suits the restaurant’s steady clientele as well as first-time visitors.

The menu changes daily, built around seasonal offerings. A recent Mother’s Day tasting menu – available in three to six courses (110–155 CHF) – illustrates the kitchen’s range: confit lobster tail with hummus and citrus, red mullet in bouillabaisse, homemade pea ravioli with morels, a choice of veal duo or Breton sole with champagne foam and asparagus, regional cheese with homemade pear bread, and a strawberry-vanilla mille-feuille with rhubarb. While that is a special event menu, it reflects the restaurant’s commitment to classic French technique and careful sourcing.

Le Murenberg also holds annual Breton Weeks in October, focusing on seafood and lobster from Brittany. The wine list is interesting and the service described as first-class.

The restaurant’s consistent quality earned it a Michelin star for 2026, a recognition of its high-level cooking. In a quiet corner of Basel-Land, Le Murenberg continues to deliver memorable French cuisine, simply and well.

Those who head to the elegant "Le Murenberg" in Bubendorf in the Basel region want to enjoy top-level French cuisine by Melanie and Jeunes Restaurateurs chef Denis Schmitt, either through a three-to-six-course tasting menu or à la carte. Or look forward to the legendary "Breton Weeks" in October, featuring an abundance of freshly caught seafood. During our visit, the amuse-bouche was an intense Prosciutto di Norcia with Piedmont hazelnuts and refreshing cauliflower foam. The first course impressed with both the glazed organic salmon served with salmon roe, watercress, radishes, and sour cream, and the juicy Breton turbot accompanied by capers, leek, and airy champagne foam. The intermezzo featured a crispy egg with morels, wild garlic, and Parmesan. The main course also deserved applause: a tender Breton "lieu jaune" on saffron foam with crisp green and white asparagus, alongside a risotto cake. The exquisite finale was a yoghurt mousse with rhubarb, sablé, and strawberries. An impressive wine list.
