The story
At Gasthaus Wildenmann in Buonas, just outside Rotkreuz on the shores of Lake Zug, Erica Bürli-Knüsel, Dominic Bürli, Amira Aeschlimann and their team run a restaurant that feels both refined and genuinely welcoming. What you find here is classic French cuisine shaped by the rhythm of the seasons and the produce of the surrounding region – a straightforward, confident kitchen that lets the ingredients speak.
The restaurant’s recognition by the Guide Michelin and its 16-point GaultMillau score affirm what regulars already know: the cooking is precise, the produce carefully sourced, and the setting – perched calmly by the lake, away from noise – makes every meal feel unhurried. In summer, the garden beneath chestnut trees extends that sense of escape.
“Fresh, high-quality products from the region, prepared with great care” – that is how the team sums up their approach. It shows. Lake Zug fish appears regularly: felchen (whitefish), caught daily by a local fisherman, can be fried, poached “Zug style”, or beer-battered. For those who prefer land, the charcoal grill turns out Swiss beef filet, Irish rib-eye, or a whole tomahawk for two, alongside marrowbone with homemade braided bread.
The kitchen offers a gourmet menu in four to six courses, built around what is best that day. Sides match the precision of the mains: a Weissweinschaumsuppe (white wine foam soup) with or without lake fish, crisp duck liver on celery with port and sour cherries, or simple seasonal salads from a nearby farm.
The Wildenmann is open Tuesday through Saturday, with lunch from 11:30 and dinner from 18:00. The wine cellar, built with passion for Bordeaux and complemented by Swiss and international selections, rewards those who linger. It is a place for private celebrations, business lunches, or a quiet dinner with a view – and one that has earned its place in the Michelin guide through steady, consistent work rather than flash.
