The story
Perched 76 floors above Bangkok in The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon, Ojo is the highest restaurant in Thailand. It serves creative Mexican cuisine with a modern twist, helmed by celebrity Chef Francisco Paco Ruano. The restaurant has earned a Michelin Recommended award for its bold approach to Asian Fusion and Mexican cooking.
The kitchen is led by Chef Paco Ruano, who trained under culinary heavyweights around the world before returning to his hometown of Guadalajara to open Alcalde, a restaurant ranked number 51 on the World’s Best List. At Ojo, Chef Paco combines traditional Mexican techniques with contemporary concepts, using both imported and locally sourced ingredients. He is joined by Executive Sous Chef Alonso, who refined his skills at Alcalde before bringing his deep respect for Mexican produce to Southeast Asia.
The venue itself is striking. Designed by Ou Baholyodhin, it is bold and awash in gold. The designer drew on his travels across Central America and the mysticism of ancient Mexican civilizations to create a space that is colorful, idiosyncratic, and unapologetically glamorous. A glittering bar and an outdoor terrace offer 360-degree views of the city below.
The menu changes regularly, with recent highlights including an Atun Aguachile of bluefin tuna, cucumber, wasabi, and jalapeño; a Tostada de Conchas with abalone, kimchi, and corn tostada; and a main of Chintlextle King Crab with white mole and chintlextle butter. For those seeking something more adventurous, cold appetizers feature edamame, pistachio, nasturtium, ant eggs, and crickets. A set lunch is also available.
Ojo has been touted by Vogue SG as “Bangkok’s hottest new restaurant,” and Time Out notes that its location atop the King Power Mahanakhon “will give you reason to go ‘oh-ho!’” The Michelin Recommended award confirms what the critics have been saying: this is a destination worth the 76-floor ascent.
