The story
Saiyut and Doctor Sai Kitchen is a family-run restaurant in Chiang Mai that treats Thai food like a canvas. Every plate reflects the hands of Ajarn Saiyud, a lifelong teacher of flower arranging and fruit-and-vegetable carving, and her daughter Doctor Sai, who learned these skills from childhood. The kitchen’s name itself honours both women: Ajarn Saiyud’s Kitchen (by Doctor Sai).
Doctor Sai originally dreamed of becoming a physician. But growing up surrounded by her mother’s artistry – garlands waiting to be strung, vegetables waiting to be carved onto ceramic plates – she realised that Thai art and food were her true calling. As she saw foreign cuisines spreading and traditional Thai restaurants fading, she understood her mother’s mission: to keep Thai cooking alive as something Thais would still love and take pride in. Today, the restaurant carries that purpose forward, presenting Thai cuisine not only as nourishment but as one of the world’s most refined, meticulous art forms.
The atmosphere is warm and unpretentious, letting the food speak. The menu follows classic Thai flavours, but each dish arrives with the precision of a carver’s hand – leaves, flowers, and vegetables shaped into elegant compositions. The Michelin Bib Gourmand for 2026 recognises the kitchen’s consistent ability to deliver good-quality, good-value cooking, a testament to the care poured into every order.
Saiyut and Doctor Sai Kitchen serves daily from 10:00 to 20:30 (closed Wednesdays), with delivery options available. For those who visit in person, the restaurant offers a quiet, thoughtful setting in Chiang Mai’s Muang district. More than a meal, it is an invitation to see Thai cuisine through the eyes of two women who have woven their lives into its preservation.
