The story
On the coast of Rawai, Samut brings the vision of celebrated chef Thitid “Ton” Tassanakajohn to Phuket. The restaurant, which earned a place in the Michelin Guide Thailand, is a showcase for the chef’s deep respect for the sea and the bold, spicy flavors of Southern Thai cuisine.
The name “Samut” means ocean, and the menu is a direct reflection of that. The eight-course dinner unfolds as a progression of sixteen delicately crafted dishes. It begins with small, precise bites and builds toward a “Samrub” style finale—a communal spread of dishes meant to be shared, offering a wonderful interplay of tastes and textures. The kitchen focuses on the freshest local catches: razor clams, Phuket lobsters, red snapper, and tiger prawns, each prepared with a distinctly southern touch—spicy, a little bold, and deeply flavorful.
Behind the restaurant is Chef Ton, a chef whose career has been defined by elevating Thai cuisine on the world stage. His flagship Bangkok restaurant, Le Du, has been named number one in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants and holds a Michelin star. For Samut, he brings that same meticulous, ingredient-driven approach to the island, creating a dining experience that feels both refined and rooted in place.
The atmosphere is smart casual, welcoming families while maintaining a sense of occasion. The restaurant’s recognition in the Michelin Guide underscores its commitment to quality, but the real draw is the chance to taste the sea through the lens of one of Thailand’s most accomplished chefs.
