Krua Samchai, the flagship restaurant of the Samchai Group, has been a fixture in Ubon Ratchathani for more than six decades. The restaurant’s philosophy is simple: select the best ingredients, from fresh produce to a blend of more than ten spices, and prepare them with care. This commitment to quality has earned it a Michelin Recommended distinction, placing it among the notable destinations for authentic Isan cuisine in the city.

The menu is a celebration of Northeastern Thai cooking. The signature dish is kai yang (grilled chicken), which won first place in a province-wide competition covering all 24 districts of Ubon Ratchathani. It is marinated with a fragrant mix of spices and grilled over charcoal. Alongside the chicken, diners can order tam som kai kem (salted egg papaya salad), tom saep pla khong (a spicy and sour catfish soup with red ant eggs), and u nor mai phung pla (a bamboo shoot and fish stomach curry). The restaurant was also the first in Ubon Ratchathani to serve som tam (papaya salad) in an air-conditioned room.

The dining experience at Krua Samchai is grounded in the group’s own production facility, which is certified by the Ministry of Public Health with a GMP rating of “very good.” Here, they make traditional mu yo (Vietnamese pork sausage), kun chiang (Chinese sausage) smoked over charcoal, and mu yong (dried shredded pork), all without MSG. This ensures that the ingredients used in the restaurant, from the sausages to the charcuterie, are fresh, clean, and safe.

The restaurant itself is a spacious, welcoming space on Phalochai Road, offering both indoor and outdoor seating with parking available. It is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, making it a reliable stop for any meal of the day. Whether you are starting the morning with a bowl of kway chap yuan (Vietnamese rice noodle soup) or ending the evening with a plate of grilled chicken and cold beer, Krua Samchai delivers the bold, direct flavors of Isan cooking that have made it a local institution.
