The story
Liman İstanbul is not a new restaurant. It is a revival. Originally opened in the 1940s on the upper floor of the Karaköy Passenger Terminal, it was designed by the prominent architect Dr. Rebii Gorbon. The restaurant quickly became a fixture of Istanbul’s social and business life, known for its Bosphorus views, impeccable service, and elegant presentations. In 1953, management passed to the Maritime Bank, and Silvian Fontana – who had once served as Atatürk’s chef – was appointed head chef. Over the next 15 years, Fontana established a modern, Western-influenced restaurant service for the first time in Turkey, introducing Turkish cuisine to the world with starched white linen, silver cutlery, and porcelain plates.
In 2021, this historic establishment was reborn at Galataport Istanbul under the D.ream Group. The team has approached the revival with enormous attention to detail and a deep respect for its roots. The result is a space that feels both timeless and contemporary. The menu is a contemporary presentation of Turkish cuisine culture, where local flavors meet world cuisine touches. It is a marriage of old and new, carrying one of the finest reflections of Istanbul’s historical culture into the present day.
The restaurant offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with both indoor and outdoor seating. The atmosphere is refined yet welcoming, a place where business lunches and celebratory dinners sit comfortably side by side. The recognition as a Michelin Recommended restaurant for 2026 underscores the quality of this modern Turkish dining experience. Liman İstanbul is more than a meal; it is a continuation of a story that began over seventy years ago, told through the lens of modern cuisine.
