The story
Step inside Emilia and you are immediately transported to the kind of Italian supper you wish you could have every night. The space is small and intimate — a tiny kitchen, one large table, a scattering of bar seats, and a daily-changing menu scribbled on a board. This is cooking that feels personal, direct, and full of flavour.
The team describe the place as "memories of our favourite Italian suppers", and that sense of warmth and generosity runs through everything. The Italian cuisine here is rooted in simplicity and boldness: bread with oil, pickled fennel with green chilli, goats' cheese with sweet pickled cherries, and plates of mortadella Toscana. Larger dishes include octopus with Sorrento tomatoes, fazzoletti with a veal and pancetta ragu bianco, and lamb leg steak with braised courgettes. A daily offal special often appears, as does salted ox cheek with piatonni beans.
This straightforward, high-quality cooking earned Emilia a Michelin Bib Gourmand — an award for good quality, good value cooking. It is a fitting recognition for a kitchen that lets ingredients speak for themselves, whether in a simple antipasto or a weekend Sunday lunch.
On Sundays, Emilia switches to a set menu at £42 per person, featuring antipasti, a primo (such as fried courgette risotto), a secondo of braised lamb shank, contorni, and a dolci like strawberry torta with sweet ricotta. A vegetarian menu is also offered.
Downstairs, the wine cellar is open for thoughtfully made wines to enjoy on the spot or take away — a natural extension of the restaurant's relaxed, generous spirit.
