The story
Amy Mitchell and Joe Suttie grew up in this corner of Devon before establishing The Old Library in the town centre. Their path led them from work at The Agaric Restaurant through pop-up events to this permanent address opposite the car park. The pair prioritise local supply chains, buying vegetables from Cuddyford Meadows and cheese from Garry and Elise at Country Cheeses. Carpenter Ambrose Vevers carved the furniture and helped shape the interior, ensuring the room reflects regional craftsmanship.
Day service operates without bookings, allowing guests to arrive for breakfast, brunch, or lunch between 9am and 3pm. The kitchen produces the 'Mr Pig', which layers slow-roasted crispy pork belly with chipotle mayo and pickled red onion inside home-baked focaccia. Another option is the 'Curious croissant', filled with smoked streaky bacon, avocado, and a poached egg. This modern European approach relies on fresh ingredients and neighbours to keep the menu grounded.
Twice a month the venue hosts a seven-course tasting dinner club for £70. Recent editions have offered braised pressed lamb with grilled chard, courgette, and caponata, matched with wines selected primarily from Europe. Regular evening menus feature dishes such as spiced beef short rib cooked with crispy onions and miso mushroom sauce. Starters include saganaki fried crumbed feta dressed with sesame, dill, and honey.
