The story
The Chequers Inn in Aylesbury delivers award-winning Modern British cuisine within a 16th-century building in Weston Turville. Owner Ranka acquired the property in 2010 following a career that included roles at London bistros and an Italian cheese factory, establishing a service culture that prioritizes guest comfort. Head Chef Jamie manages the kitchen with significant creative control, driving the team toward a potential third rosette while leveraging specialized equipment to refine daily menus.
The kitchen applies a modern British cooking style to every plate, ensuring all food is prepared fresh using regional produce. Signature dishes highlight the chef's creativity, such as Ibstone venison tartare served with oyster sauce mayonnaise and shrimp crackers, or Cornish hake accompanied by English strawberries and Champagne beurre blanc. An in-house smoker allows the team to impart cherrywood smoke to duck and a maple and Earl Grey infusion to cod loin, creating textures and flavors that distinguish this pub restaurant.
The historic venue provides two contrasting environments for visitors. The original bar area features broad polished flagstone floors, exposed beams, and an open fireplace for a relaxed atmosphere. Those dining for the AA 2 Rosette recognition often choose the restaurant section, which offers a cleaner, contemporary backdrop for meals. Smart casual attire is expected, and the team welcomes families during lunch hours before transitioning to a quieter evening service. Large parties are accommodated when guests book directly by phone.
