The keeper of the keys

Silvana Bandini acquired the property in March 2018 after a career that included tenure at The PIG near Bath. Born in South Africa to an Italian father and Scottish mother, she brings a blend of international hospitality experience to this former clergy house. The venue carries the name of the Dorset dialect word for cowslip, reflecting the wildflowers that grace the surrounding Thomas Hardy hills each spring. Bandini has preserved the building's intrinsic character while introducing her own stamp through thoughtful updates and a commitment to local collaboration.

Stone and timber

Dating back to the fourteenth century, the structure features low beams and an ancient hearth where a wood burner warms the interior during colder months. The layout accommodates a main bar area that welcomes dogs and children, alongside a separate Snug Bar reserved for quieter evenings. Beyond the walls lies a walled garden where guests can enjoy drinks in the summer sun. The accommodation comprises nine individually styled bedrooms finished with Italian bed linen and organic toiletries sourced from Wild England, a maker based just across the border in Somerset.

A shifting culinary landscape

The kitchen recently underwent significant changes, pivoting toward a model centered on pop-up collaborations and a curated bar snack selection. Residents and visitors can now sample offerings from partners such as the Crust & Cow pop-up, which operates five days a week from late afternoon. The spirit of European cooking traditions persists in the emphasis on seasonal sourcing, while the menu adapts to the current format by blending contemporary European fare with local innovations. Mornings begin with a continental breakfast featuring freshly cooked eggs, available to both overnight guests and walk-in patrons throughout the week.
