The story

Riverine Rabbit, Birmingham: Modern Cuisine with a Michelin Bib Gourmand

Riverine Rabbit's Origins

Riverine Rabbit began its life in Cape Town, South Africa. Chef Ash later moved to Birmingham to build a life with her wife Erin, and together they revived the concept through a year of pop-ups in the UK and abroad. The desire for a permanent home led them to Stirchley, Birmingham, where they secured a small spot and opened the restaurant.

The name Riverine Rabbit carries deep meaning for the family. It reflects strong roots in the Karoo Desert, where the elusive rabbit species lives, and underscores an ongoing commitment to supporting sustainable farming practices that help prevent the extinction of such species. Though the restaurant has shifted geographically, its ethos remains the same: Ash takes time getting to know farmers, producers, and purveyors locally and across the UK to source ingredients with sustainability and respect at the forefront.

A Menu Rooted in Sustainability

While the restaurant’s modern cuisine evolves with the seasons, the guiding principle is clear: respect for ingredients and the land they come from. Ash’s approach to cooking is informed by her relationships with suppliers, ensuring that every plate reflects both the quality of the produce and the story behind it. Erin, a materials scientist by day, manages front of house by night, bringing the same precision and care to the dining experience.

The restaurant has quickly become a destination for those seeking thoughtful, ingredient-led cooking in an intimate setting. The focus on sustainability and traceability is not a marketing angle but a genuine practice woven into the daily operation.

Michelin Recognition

Riverine Rabbit has been delighted to receive recognition from the Michelin Guide. In 2025, the restaurant was awarded a Bib Gourmand, highlighting its good quality, good value cooking. Additionally, chef Ash was named Michelin Young Chef of the Year 2025. These accolades reflect the dedication and skill that Ash and Erin pour into every aspect of the restaurant.

With a strong following and high demand for tables – reservations for three months ahead are released on the first of each month and often fill within minutes – Riverine Rabbit has established itself as one of Birmingham’s most exciting modern cuisine restaurants. Its journey from Cape Town to Stirchley is a testament to the power of passion, partnership, and a deep respect for the natural world.
