The story
In the quiet Somerset village of Batcombe, The Three Horseshoes occupies a 17th-century inn that Margot Henderson opened with a simple, confident vision: a pub for all seasons. It has a cosy locals’ bar, two dining rooms, a courtyard, terrace and lawn for outdoor eating and drinking, and five en suite bedrooms that are both luxurious and comfortable. The recognition from Michelin as a Recommended restaurant speaks to the quality of what comes from the kitchen.
Head chef Nye Smith leads the kitchen, where the menu changes daily to reflect the seasons. The cooking celebrates local ingredients, moving from hearty pub classics to more elegant dishes without losing the warmth of a country inn. A sample May lunch menu and a Sunday lunch menu are available online, but the daily reality is driven by what’s fresh. The bar is stocked with real ales, craft beer, local ciders and a carefully selected wine list.
British cuisine is the foundation here – straightforward, ingredient-led and rooted in the landscape. Whether you stop in for a pint and a plate by the fire or book a table for a full dinner, the rhythm of the place feels natural and unhurried.
Above the pub, five bedrooms offer a place to stay after a long lunch or a walk on the Mendip Hills. Private dining is also available, making it a versatile spot for gatherings. Open every day from midday, with breakfast served for guests, lunch and dinner service timed to suit both relaxed afternoons and evening meals.
