The story

Church Street Tavern, Colchester: Michelin-Recommended World Cuisine

A Tavern Reimagined

In a handsome townhouse built as a Savings Bank in 1852, Church Street Tavern opened in February 2014 with a clear purpose: to be the kind of place where people meet, eat well, and feel properly looked after. The ground floor bar and lounge leads upstairs to a first-floor restaurant serving simple, freshly prepared, wholesome food. As one critic noted, it is “a handsome, big-boned townhouse … which combines the warmth and hospitality of the traditional tavern with the serious cooking chops of the Tavern 2.0.” Another praised the “beautiful, effortless decor, great food … most important of all, impeccable, friendly service.”

Thoughtful World Cuisine

The kitchen works with a philosophy that freshness comes first. Most ingredients are sourced within 30 miles – from local farmers, growers, and inshore day boats on the Essex, Suffolk, and South coasts. If a product doesn’t meet their standards locally, they look further afield, but the default is local. This approach yields a menu that changes with the seasons and reflects a world cuisine sensibility: straightforward dishes built on superb raw materials. The same care extends to a drinks list chosen from producers who respect both ingredient and environment.

A Space with Character

The dining room is filled with artwork – paintings, drawings, photography, and a spectacular mural by Lucy Tiffney. Plates and glassware are found at junk shops and antique fairs, giving the space an effortless, collected feel. The atmosphere is warm and unhurried, with service that makes guests feel genuinely welcome.

Recognised by Michelin

Church Street Tavern’s consistent quality earned it a place in the Michelin Guide’s Recommended list for 2026, a fitting nod to its serious culinary ambition wrapped in a relaxed, tavern setting.

Part of a Family

The Tavern is one of three Essex establishments that also includes the 15th-century Sun Inn in Dedham and the more contemporary White Hart Inn on Mersea Island – each sharing the same commitment to good food, good drink, and genuine hospitality.

The Good Food Guide — Good

Just off Colchester’s main drag, the Church Street Tavern is rightly popular and comfortable in its well-worn skin, providing happily for loyal regulars and passing trade. Downstairs is the bar, upstairs is the restaurant, where ‘classic, casual, celebratory food’ is the deal and service is ‘impeccable, warm and friendly’ throughout. Readers have praised the ‘unctuous’ open crab lasagne (‘rich and generous’) as well as smokey aubergine croquettes with goat’s cheese. Impressively rendered main courses might range from exceptionally tender pigeon (‘perfectly pink with beetroot and blackberries’) to monkfish grilled on the bone and served Indian-style with dhal and cauliflower. The repertoire also extends to rare-breed burgers and various pastas – perhaps spaghetti with cavolo nero pesto and Old Winchester cheese or hand-made tagliatelle with beef ragù, chilli and ricotta. To conclude, sticky date pudding is freshened up with fig-leaf ice cream, and there’s a choc-chip take on baked Alaska with pistachio sablé – although the ‘perfect texture’ of a chocolate and blackberry panna cotta sealed the deal for one diner. Linger over cocktails or enjoy something from the well-annotated wine list – maybe the ‘rich and textured’ notes of a 2022 Chardonnay from Danbury Ridge Estate near Chelmsford will take your fancy; there are plenty of 375ml carafe offers, too. ‘One of best evenings for sheer pleasure in many years,’ concluded a contented soul.
