The story

Forage Farm Shop & Kitchen in Cowbridge Celebrates Seasonal British Cuisine

Roots on the Penllyn Estate

Forage Farm Shop & Kitchen in Cowbridge grounds its British cooking philosophy in the land that has supported the Homfray family since 1846. The project finally opened its doors in 2020 after years of planning secured proper access to the historic property. Chefs and suppliers now draw heavily from the estate’s own fields and pastures, turning crops like oil seed rape into pressing oil while rearing cattle, sheep, and free-range poultry on site. This closed-loop approach keeps food miles low and ensures every plate reflects the Vale of Glamorgan’s agricultural calendar.

Seasonal Plates From the Field

The kitchen builds its British cooking repertoire around what arrives fresh from the soil and the adjacent butchery counters. A recent summer offering features Penllyn Estate pork escalopes served with garlic butter and grilled asparagus, while winter menus often turn toward comfort classics like traditional Welsh rarebit made with mature cheddar and Butty Bach ale. Guests can also order fried Glamorgan sausages bound with Black Bomber Snowdonia cheese and finely chopped leeks. Every dish follows a straightforward rule where quality local produce dictates the entire menu rotation.

An Open Lawn and Community Hub

Visitors gather on the expansive grassy terrace under the open sky, where families enjoy weekend roasts alongside casual grab-and-counter sandwiches. The Good Food Guide recently named the venue a Local Gem, noting how seamlessly it operates as a retail space, dining room, and event centre without losing its relaxed character. Evening grills arrive on Friday and Saturday nights, followed by Sunday suppers built around slow-cooked meat joints and garden vegetables. The whole operation functions as a practical gathering place rather than a formal destination.

The Good Food Guide — Local Gem

‘A must for a family day out,’ this enterprising set-up brings together a farm shop, restaurant, butchery and events space on Penllyn Estate. Not surprisingly, the daytime menu is tailored to all palates and preferences – although everything is dictated by produce from the Estate (much of it organic). Start the day with a full Welsh breakfast or spiced eggs Benedict, linger over coffee and cake, or drop by for a lunchtime fill-up (a home-smoked chicken club sandwich, Nepalese lamb with Asian slaw or beer-battered haddock). There are grills on Friday and Saturday evening, while Sunday is a showcase for juicy roast joints and the freshest home-grown vegetables. Pizzas and burgers ‘to go’, too.
