The story
Since 2008, The Seahorse has occupied a waterside dining room on the South Embankment in Dartmouth, looking out over the River Dart. It is a place built on the belief that exceptional ingredients need little help. Fresh fish arrives each morning from Brixham market, just a few miles along the coast, and shapes the daily menu. The cooking is charcoal-fired, direct and precise, letting the quality of the seafood speak for itself. Mediterranean influences appear in the flavours and in the spirit of the place – particularly through the restaurant’s connection with Trattoria al Gatto Nero on the Venetian island of Burano, a friendship that runs deep.
Seafood is the heart of the menu, but the kitchen also looks to the seasons for the best from land and sea. The menu changes daily according to what the market offers, so no two visits are exactly the same. The approach is simple: take the finest seafood and transform it into something special – with charcoal, with expertise, and with little else asked of ingredients that need no improvement. The Seahorse has earned a Michelin Recommended award, a recognition that reflects the consistency and quality of the cooking.
Behind the main dining room lies Joe’s Bar – a softly lit, Venetian-inspired space where you are welcome for an aperitivo, a nightcap, or simply cocktails by the river under the late licence. The wine list is carefully curated to sit alongside seafood and Mediterranean flavours: Burgundies, old-world classics, expressive Italian whites and reds, bottles from coastal vineyards, and small allocations that don’t last long. In winter, the restaurant runs a mid-week Wine Club, a relaxed evening where guests can bring a treasured bottle without corkage.
The Cantina is the private dining room, ideal for birthdays, anniversaries, or a long table with good wine and no hurry. Its menus, seasonal and Italian in spirit, are designed for exactly that kind of evening. The Seahorse also hosts events throughout the year – guest chef dinners, seafood suppers, and the Dartmouth Food Festival each October, when the town celebrates food and wine along the waterfront.
Families, locals, and travellers have been finding their way to The Seahorse for slow afternoons and lively suppers since 2008. It remains a place where good food, good wine, and good company are the only priorities.
