Isla Durham: Modern British Dining with Good Food Guide Recognition

From Tasting Menus to Shared Tables

Isla in Durham serves Modern British cooking with a relaxed focus on shared plates. The kitchen swaps rigid tasting formats for approachable dishes that prioritize flavour over formality. This shift earned recognition in the 2026 Good Food Guide, which noted how the team trades precision plating for genuine warmth. Guests now encounter a roster built around weekend brunch and midweek gatherings rather than fixed courses.

Brick Walls and an Open Hearth

The dining space occupies a converted terraced house where exposed brick meets soft furnishings. A large central hearth anchors the room and keeps the atmosphere grounded throughout colder months. Staff members move through this layout with a quiet attentiveness that matches the building’s residential scale. The result feels less like a commercial venue and more like a well run private home.

Brunch Rituals and Savoury Sharing Plates

Morning visitors often order the slow-cooked ham hock served alongside fresh roti and sharp gherkin ketchup. Saturday service brings a towering crumpet layered with spicy sausage, nduja, melted cheese and a runny fried egg. This flexible approach to British cooking extends to afternoon sharing plates featuring courgette bhajis dressed in rose harissa houmous. Even the vegetarian options carry distinct character, such as roasted cauliflower paired with curry sauce and lime pickle gel.

Wines and Sweet Finishes

A concise wine list focuses on easy drinking bottles that complement the day’s menu without demanding expertise. Evening diners typically finish with a piña colada meringue or a chocolate tart enriched with miso caramel and popcorn ice cream. Those seeking lighter options can simply request a flat white and a counter cake while watching the kitchen operate. Every element stays practical yet deliberate.

The Good Food Guide — Good

From the people behind Coarse on Reform Place, Isla swaps tasting menus for something more casual but equally delicious. Occupying a converted terraced house, the place still has a homely feel with bare brick walls, a big open hearth and pretty decor, while super-sweet staff add to the easy-going vibe. Breakfast and brunch are ‘truly outstanding’ – from a plate of slow-cooked ham hock with roti and gherkin ketchup to a magnificent giant crumpet with spicy sausage, ‘nduja, cheese, garlic mayo and a fried egg. Lunch and dinner menus offer a roster of eclectic dishes bursting with ‘super unique flavours’: courgette bhajis with rose-harissa houmous and pine nuts; Korean pork belly bao buns; scallops with celeriac purée, crispy mushrooms and chicken butter. Finish with a piña colada meringue or chocolate and miso caramel tart with popcorn ice cream. Sunday lunch means traditional roasts with all the trimmings, alongside some unusual fish and vegetarian options (roasted cauliflower with curry sauce, lime pickle gel and poppadom ‘crumb’, for example). A short list of easy-drinking wines does its job, and there are cakes and croissants on the counter – if you simply want a ‘perfect flat white’ and a sweet bite. ‘We travelled from York,’ commented one reader, ‘and it would be worth the train fare to come back – which we absolutely will.’
