The story
Since 1736, The Bath Arms has stood on the edge of the Longleat Estate in Wiltshire, a short drive from Frome and Bath. Today, it operates as a traditional yet stylish country inn, balancing the warmth of an oak-stool-lined bar with the ambition of a kitchen that has earned a Michelin Recommended award. The pub’s own words describe it as “simple, comfortable, unpretentious, attractive” — a sentiment echoed by reviewers from The Telegraph and The Sunday Times, who praise both the setting and the service.
Head Chef Jack Chapman leads the kitchen. He joined the Beckford group as a kitchen porter at seventeen and now oversees a menu rooted in the local landscape. Meat and game come from the Longleat Estate and nearby farms; fish is landed daily on the south coast. The Modern British menu changes with the seasons, offering everything from dry-aged Wiltshire steaks to comforting Sunday roasts and lighter bar snacks on the terrace. A dedicated private dining room, The Loft, seats up to twenty-two guests for bespoke menus.
The bar is equally considered. Alongside classic cocktails and a wine list curated by the group’s own Beckford Bottle Shop (featuring over 250 wines), the pub serves traditional local ales including its own Horning Ale. Ingredients are sourced with care: Walter Rose & Son for butchery, Longman’s Cheese from the Vale of Camelot, and ChalkStream trout from the Test and Itchen rivers.
Sixteen bedrooms, split between the main inn and a converted stable block, offer a simple, comfortable retreat. The property also houses the Bramley Treatment Cabin, set within its gardens. Whether for a long lunch, a summer evening on the terrace, or an overnight stay, The Bath Arms delivers a distinctly British kind of hospitality — one that feels both historic and very much of the moment.
