The story

Rye Bakery in Frome: Artisan Baking and Neapolitan Pizza in a Creative Warehouse

The Warehouse Collective

Rye Bakery anchors a bustling warehouse conversion in Frome, defining itself as a neighbourhood bakery rooted in Somerset produce. Recognised as a Local Gem by The Good Food Guide, Owen Postgate oversees the kitchen with a strict emphasis on provenance, ensuring every ingredient travels the shortest distance from farm to counter. The open layout fills quickly with locals grabbing morning coffee or settling into long wooden tables. This grounded approach to food mirrors the building’s industrial heritage while keeping service consistently warm and unpretentious.

Baking and Pizza Craft

Daily production focuses on European techniques applied to local grain, producing a steady rotation of sweet and savoury baked goods. The cardamom buns disappear by midmorning, while seasonal Danish variations like orange crème draw regular queues outside the glass display cases. A massive woodfired oven handles Neapolitan style pizzas featuring fior di latte, fresh pesto, and house cured pepperoni. Every dough rests overnight and every topping comes from regional producers who supply the wider area.

Evening Service and Wine Program

As daylight fades, the space shifts toward a relaxed wine bar hosting monthly tasters from visiting winemakers across Italy and England. Live acoustic sets on weekends pair naturally with plates of house fermented vegetables, crisp garden salads, and tangy pickles made from surplus harvests. Guests can join scheduled tastings led by the importers themselves or simply order a glass while watching the pizza oven work. The evening menu remains deliberately small so the team maintains exact standards across every plate.

The Good Food Guide — Local Gem

Forming part of a business collective comprising an art gallery and wine bar with live music at the weekends, Owen Postgate’s bakery-café takes up most of the space at this hugely popular warehouse conversion. It’s all about quality, with provenance to the fore – everything is sourced as locally as possible, from fruit and vegetables to the grain used in the baking. Everyone praises the ‘divine’ pastries: the cardamom buns are a daily sell-out and there are ‘absolutely delicious’ seasonal Danishes (we enjoyed an orange crème version). On the savoury side, don’t miss the homemade pickles, ferments and salads or the Neapolitan-style fior di latte, pesto and pepperoni pizza from the huge pizza oven. There's an offshoot café on Whittox Lane.
