The story

The Talbot Inn Mells: A Historic Coaching Inn for Modern British Dining

Centuries of shelter and stone

The Talbot Inn in Mells operates as a modern British pub built inside a fifteenth-century coaching house. Guests cross a stone arch into a cobbled courtyard before following narrow passageways toward a beamed bar where winter fires crackle against oak beams. Softly lit dining rooms hold polished tables set with candles, a layout that earned the venue a Local Gem distinction from the Good Food Guide. The space balances rustic architecture with a quiet warmth that invites lingering conversation.

The kitchen larder and leadership

Head Chef Rhys guides the kitchen with a focus on straightforward British cooking that highlights the surrounding landscape. He works alongside Moni, who manages daily production with an emphasis on precision and care. Seasonal vegetables arrive directly from the property’s own kitchen garden while game and beef travel from Wiltshire farms run by the Cook family at Walter Rose & Sons. Cornish trouts and white fish make regular appearances across the weekly rotating menus.

Seasonal plates and cellar selections

The dinner menu leans heavily into comforting British fare while respecting regional supply chains. Cider-battered fish and chips from Brixham sits beside honey-roasted ham paired with a duck egg, while bar snacks like sausage rolls and monkfish scampi with lemon mayo bridge lunch and evening service. The beverage program matches this grounded approach through a curated selection of European wines and locally brewed Talbot Ale. Regular live music in the log-burning Sitting Room rounds out an evening that feels both refined and thoroughly accessible.

The Good Food Guide — Local Gem

Pass through the stone arch, enter the well-worn cobbled courtyard and step into a warren of passageways leading to a locally popular beamed bar with fires lit in winter, and softly lit dining rooms with candles on old polished tables. The 15th-century Talbot puts on a convincing show. Staff are uniformly cheerful and accommodating, while the menu deals in superior pub grub – from snacks such as sausage rolls or monkfish scampi with lemon mayo to classics including cider-battered Brixham fish and chips, the Talbot burger, or honey-roasted ham, duck egg, and chips. In addition, there’s appreciation for the reasonably priced, European-leaning wine list (with decent by-the-glass choice). Visitors also praise the comfortable bedrooms, which offer good value for the area.
