The story
In Gillingham, Dorset, The Dog House is a country pub that brings something genuinely different to the table. It is a female-led establishment, described by its team as inclusive for everybody and every palate. The ambition is clear: to showcase the talent women bring to the culinary industry while remaining a traditional pub at heart.
The kitchen is built around a custom grill made by Simon Gudgeon, and the cooking is all about fire. Head Chef Pascale oversees a menu of small plates and family-style portions, all designed for sharing. The food comes staggered from the grill to the table, cooked to temperature rather than to time. The ethos is communal—guests are encouraged to "dig into their food together" in a true feast. The Sunday roasts are a particular point of pride, served family-style.
The Dog House is as much a bar as it is a restaurant. There is a dedicated bar snacks menu for those after a quick bite with a pint of locally brewed beer or cider. The cocktail list is considered, and the wine offering is serious: the Red Room Wine Cellar provides an extensive selection for those who want to explore.
The setting is relaxed and welcoming. The pub and gardens are dog-friendly, though the two resident cats mean dogs are asked to stay on leads. The space is used to create a special dining experience, whether in the main room, the fire room, or the gardens. This approach to modern British cooking, rooted in local sourcing and open-fire technique, earned The Dog House a Michelin Recommended award for 2026. It is a place that balances community, creativity, and a very good meal.
