The story

Bouchon Bistrot Hexham: Timeless French Bistro Dining

The Kitchen & Leadership

Bouchon Bistrot serves authentic French cuisine in Hexham, guided by owner Gregory and his Loire Valley background. Since opening in 2007, he has anchored the kitchen to Head Chef Nico, who arrived nine years ago. Their method prioritises time-honoured techniques and local seasonal produce over complicated presentations. The Good Food Guide awarded the establishment a Good rating for its 2026 edition, praising how consistently the team executes these classic preparations.

Kitchen Highlights

Guests usually choose between the rotating prix fixe selection and the fixed à la carte menu, both highlighting seasonal produce through a distinctly French lens. Garlic escargot and steak tartare commonly start the meal before heavier plates arrive. Confit duck served alongside gratin dauphinois and fine beans remains a reliable main course choice. The kitchen also keeps an airy cheese soufflé on the roster, a preparation that pairs smoothly with their concise, French-led wine list.

Room & Atmosphere

A 2021 interior refresh divided the ground floor into three separate areas, blending Art Nouveau prints and vintage Pernod signage with contemporary furniture. The floor plan directs guests toward a sun-trap roof terrace spanning two levels above the street. Warmer months bring visitors to this outdoor space for light bites and pastry courses under open skies. The remaining dining rooms feature comfortable seating and quiet acoustics that comfortably handle both casual weekday lunches and larger gatherings.

The Good Food Guide — Good

A friendly welcome settles you into a comfy dining room combining classic decor, Art Nouveau prints and Pernod paraphernalia with some contemporary furnishings, but that's where the sleek modernity ends. In the kitchen, it's all about delivering time-honoured bistro staples, which means French onion soup sopping up into garlic croûtons, escargots brimming with garlic butter, and soufflés so light and breezy they would waft away if they weren’t anchored by their pool of rich Comté sauce. Main courses are reliably hearty: confit duck leg with gratin dauphinois is a favourite with reporters, likewise braised rabbit leg with morels and juicy slices of roast chicken breast on a bed of potatoes and oyster mushrooms sautéed to a fudge-like softness with a slick of tarragon sauce. Some lighter options, such as smoked salmon with tomato and cucumber salad, are available on the well-priced prix-fixe in the afternoon and early evening. In the warmer months, it's worth taking desserts such as the ever-popular tarte tatin or cannelé bordelais with hazelnut ice cream and salted caramel on the new roof terrace, while surveying the picturesque prospect of Hexham all around. To drink, consider a glass or two from their concise, French-led wine list (prices start at £8).
